You need this kit to install the Optima battery in a Toyota Prius 2000, 2001, 2002, 2003, because the North American and Australian Prius comes with connectors for Japanese electrical posts. The kit replaces the connectors. (However, for the 2004+ Prius you can now use a direct replacement battery and do no need this kit.) The kit will not work for a Prius made for Japan they appear to have been made with American electrical post connectors.
In the 2000 to 2003 you have to modify the battery bracket. However, it is easy to do and we provide instructions. Also you should be aware that there is less space around the battery in the 2000 to 2003 Prius and we have not crash tested this installation.
With this kit you can replace your Prius 2001, 2002, 2003, battery with a longer lasting battery.
You can keep the original Toyota battery connectors so if you or a future owner of the car should ever want to go back to a battery with Japanese electrical posts you can.

The positive connector has to connect with the battery and the Toyota fuse assembly. We had it custom made! You also will not find the vent connectors in an auto parts store.
We have written and rewritten the instructions to make it easy for most people however if you have no desire to work on electrical parts you may want to buy the kit and have your battery professionally installed.
At least three users have told me that their 2001-2003 Prius now gets better mileage with the new battery. One customer with a 2004 also reported this. One classic owner told me that getting a new battery restored his mileage back to the original mileage he was getting when the car was brand new and another classic Prius owner told me that he is now getting better mileage then he did originally. So if you 12 volt battery is weak it could also be affecting your gas mileage.
If you are not sure about the state of your current battery we have instruction on how to test it here.
