  Dictionaries on CDYes you can look up a word on the internet but if you are used to a particular dictionary you should have it on your desk computer or laptop as well. Some of the best dictionaries are not available on the internet. To fully use a dictionary you have to take time to learn its abbreviations and symbols. By having a dictionary you use all the time right on your computer you get learn its abbreviations and symbols so you get the most out of it. Plus if you are listening to the pronunciation that is often faster when you do not have to wait on the internet. An advantage to the internet is you easily consult multiple references at once. Well it is nice to use that AND have a few good dictionaries right on your hard drive of your desktop or laptop. I highly recommend this.
The words are spoken on many talking dictionaries on CD. You no longer have to only use pronunciation symbols to try to figure out how the word is pronounced. The Collins Cobuild for PC even pronounces the various forms of the word in British English. The Cobuild also lets a user record his pronunciation and compare it with the one on the CD. The Oxford Concise English Dictionary 11th edition pronounces British English. The Random House Webster's Unabridged Dictionary is a good advanced English Dictionary that pronounces the words in American English.
The Cambridge International Dictionary of English (CD-ROM pronounces English words in British and American English. The Collins Talking Bilingual pronounces the words in both languages and lets you record your pronunciation so you can compare.
Computerized dictionaries make it easier and faster to look up words. You may find yourself looking up words more often and gaining a better understanding of English.
With most dictionaries on CD, you can click on a word you do not understand within a definition, and get that word's definitions. This is helpful. Then you can easily go back to earlier words you looked up.
