Air Filter for Prius 2010 to 2015 - avoid expensive time consuming cleanings and prevent premature battery failure due to overheating.
The 2010-2015 Prius did not come with a filter for hybrid battery cooling air.
The dirt starts accumulating in the cooling passages between the battery modules that are farthest from the fan. So it does not take much dirt to clog a cooling passage and put your battery at RISK! (See pictures below.)
Avoid the expense of having to have your large battery cooling system cleaned!
It can prevent premature battery failure due to overheating! (If one battery cell heats up and fails you will get a Red Traingle yes you can often still drive the car for a while see details here.)
This filter catches the hair and dirt.
One bolt install. Instructions with pictures provided.
Easy to clean in place with a vacuum. Can also be washed with water.
We provide stickers to remind you to inspect and clean when necessary.
Once installed it can NOT be removed by a passenger.

Easy to install. Just need a 12mm socket, extension arm and ratchet! Installs in minutes. Clean with a vacuum cleaner or wash!
This next picture shows the dirt that can accumulate in the hybrid battery cooling fan. We have seen worse! And the Prius often does not start turning on warning lights till the fan and battery are very dirty!
Look at the picture of the intake. Notice it is just a few inches from the seat bench. So any dust, hair or dirt that was siting on the bench can easily get sucked in when some one sits down etc. Also there is no filter and you can see right into the duct. This is the way the car was made.
In the next pictures notice the air from the fan goes straight into the bottom of the battery. No bends, so over half the dirt gets blown into the battery. The intake grill has our filter installed for the picture. About half the dirt you see in the fan is also in the battery cooling passages. So if you battery cooling fan is at all dirty you also want to clean the battery. A can of compressed air and a brush for cleaning refrigerator coils works great.
This is the dirt on the side of the last module. This is dirt in the air passage where the battery modules are actually cooled.

This is the bottom of the battery case after the battery modules have been removed. The lines of dirt were sitting at the bottom of the battery modules where the air flows into the battery preventing proper cooling. NOT GOOD!
You will only have to clean the filter in the future but that is easy. Usually you can just vacuum the filter in place and look to make sure it is clean. You can also take the filter out and clean it with water. Access is just one bolt.
We provide you with a sticker to remind you to check it to see if it is dirty. The filter can easily be seen as it is just behind the intake between the rear passenger door and the back seat. When the filter turns to dirty gray try vacuuming it and if that does not work take it out and wash it. The filter can be washed with plain water (garden hose).
I have been using this filter material in my own 2007 Prius for years. I cleaned the fan and found only a thin layer of very fine dust on the fan and nothing on the batteries. But the filter did get dirty. You will have to clean it!
Our filter itself is very porous with large holes to allow plenty of air to flow. We have been hand cutting them and putting them in the Prius for about 1.5 years now with no problems.
Our filter captures all the hair and but the finest dirt so your fan and battery should not clog up. This is very important if you regularly carry people (yes we have seen human hair in the battery and hair from clothing) or pets in the back seat.
It is easy to install. You push down on the back seat and undo one bolt to get take out the plastic grill it fits behind.
Why take a chance and have your hybrid battery fail prematurely.
Comments:
"I received the package and installed it. Very nice product, I actually like that the filter is inside instead of outside to prevent tampering by people in the back seat." J. R., ELMHURST, IL
"The installation went fine, thank you. I appreciate your ideas and efforts to help with Prius ownership! ( I bought a battery installation kit from you many years ago too. )
Thanks again and best wishes for a great 2019 and beyond,"
October 2019:
I have vacuumed the filter while in place a few times with a shop vac.
We have a German Shepherd (aka a German Shedder) dog that often rides in the back seat and this filter has stopped a lot of his hair from entering the protected area. E. R., Yelm, WA
